Wood Decks; repair, replacement, maintenance and installation:
While many in HP have no deck what so ever, many do. Some homes have 3 levels of decks and accessories to boot [hot tub, BBQ and heaters]. Open for discussion and hearing about your experiences.
Lot # 7 - I had been noticing rot on some of our deck posts tops and around a few bases and knew it would soon be time for repair or replacement. I was also wanting to correct the spacing between the balusters which didn’t meet the current code and were consequently not safe for small children. Then in early spring, ‘09, I noticed what appeared to be saw dust at the base of one of the corner walls under the deck. Our upper deck is 15’ in the air so I climbed a ladder and pulled off some of the siding. I discovered there was “serious” rot and carpenter ant damage.
ReplyDeleteWe decided to replace the entire deck. However, during demolition I discovered the frame, stringers and ledger were treated lumber and were all still in great shape so we kept those. All the rest, the support posts, floor and railing needed to be replaced. I did all the work myself except the railing on the steps and chose to get some professional help for that.
I contracted with “Distinctive Deck” a business owned by David Gardenhire. He had just completed a new deck for my daughter and son-in-law in Klahanie. He does great work at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend him.
